MEET THE MEMBER: BOB WINSLOW
I am pleased to introduce this month's featured ASCE member Bob Winslow, a licensed civil engineer with EDA Professional Engineering. Among other things, Bob has been involved with the design of over 100 school projects. He moved to Atascadero in '04 from Yucaipa, eight years after marrying his wife Denise, a registered nurse for Atascadero Unified School District. They have two children and wanted to get them out of Southern California to find "More Opie and less Prince of Bellaire."

A high school drafting teacher brought him into the wonderful world of engineering with the amazing Versa CAD (one of the first iterations of CAD). At college at Cal Poly Pomona he wasted no time submersing himself into engineering. Freshman year he was awarded an internship at Civiltec and after one year he landed a job as a CAD draftsman at CM Engineering. While at CM Engineering, Bob honed his engineering skill and learned site, street and utility design.

A consultant presented him with an opportunity in 1995 to work on their own. Focusing mostly on school design, the new company, EPIC Engineers, took off. Bob quickly found himself in charge of two project managers and a production staff. A big decision presented itself: finish college and quit his job, or continue on with work and put off the degree. Not wanting to "Sit still on [his] career," he opted to grow this new company. Bob became one of few people who were able to complete the PE primarily based on experience. He realizes it was the hard way and gives credit to the SF branch of ASCE for putting together a study session that helped him trek through the seismic portion.

As their company grew and responsibility increased he came to another fork in the road: stick around and take over the business, or move in order to provide a better environment for his children. Family took priority and in February of '04 he interviewed at EDA Design Professionals. Four months later, Bob and his family were headed to Atascadero.

Now at an associate level with EDA, Bob has worked on Colony Square in Atascadero, where he "fit ten pounds of engineering into a five pound bag." He enjoyed this project because "This is not the part of the world where we often get to do reuse." This mixed use project includes a movie theater, second story residential on commercial, and a vacated public street with utilities that must be relocated. He also currently working on a 750 unit resort community and working with Wal-Mart to bring a Supercenter to the Central Coast.

Outside of engineering he is involved with the Rotary Club and Boy Scouts. He is the Assistant Scoutmaster to Troop 150 as well as the District Chairman of the Del Norte District where he is in charge of volunteers, activities and funding from Monterey County to the Cuesta Grade.

He hopes to continue improving his firm’s quality of work as well as provide a competitive business source at EDA. Even with the positive reputation he holds in the community and the success he has found through engineering, Bob still plans on heading back to school and completing his degree.
